Working with the local community groups, older residents and people with dementia, we collected memories about the heritage of Knowle West, such as the Filwood Broadway Cinema, Filwood Swimming Pool and Wills Tobacco Factory.
These memories became part of a sensory installation: a memory chest that enables people to relive the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of times and places gone by. We wanted to provide a platform for older members of our community to enjoy and reconnect with the past in a meaningful way, and re-affirm them as the best way to learn about the past. We hope that the instillation will also be a useful tool for young people to learn about their local area, and a reminiscence tool for people with dementia.
The memory chest is in our main foyer – please drop in to view and interact with the archive of memorabilia!
