Access

We’re committed to creating an environment that’s safe, inclusive and supportive, where everyone can access our facilities and participate fully in activities.

We want to make sure that all visitors have an enjoyable time at Knowle West Media Centre (Leinster Avenue) and KWMC: The Factory (at Filwood Green Business Park).

We hope the information below is useful in planning your visit. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to speak to a member of the team.

Our buildings: Knowle West Media Centre (Leinster Avenue)

KWMC uses a keyfob entry system to keep the building secure. If the main doors are closed – which will be the case the majority of the time – please use the door intercom to request entry. A member of our Front of House team will unlock the door for you.

The building is wheelchair accessible but unfortunately we don’t have automatic doors. When you arrive, please use the door intercom to ask a member of our team to open the main doors for you. We have a lift between the ground floor and first floor. There are 20 steps (in two sets of 10) between the ground floor and first floor. Handrails are provided.

KWMC has two parking spaces for the use of disabled visitors.

There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor which doesn’t require a RADAR key. Baby changing facilities are available in the accessible toilet.

Personal assistants and assistance animals are very welcome.

A video tour of the KWMC building is available here.

Our buildings: KWMC: The Factory

The Factory is based at Filwood Green Business Park. The Business Park has parking spaces available for the use of disabled visitors.

The areas of KWMC: The Factory that are open to the public are wheelchair accessible.

Toilets in KWMC: The Factory are accessible and gender neutral. The toilets are located on the ground floor and don’t require a RADAR key.

Personal assistants and assistance animals are very welcome.

Planning your visit

If you have specific access needs or if there are things that would make your visit to KWMC or KWMC: The Factory more comfortable, please let us know – in advance if possible! For example, please get in touch if you need to bring a Personal Assistant to a course, or your child would benefit from use of a quiet space during an after-school activity.

When you book a place at an event at KWMC or KWMC: The Factory via our online booking platforms (Eventbrite and the KWMC Shop) we’ll ask if you have any access or dietary needs so we can make sure we provide an enjoyable and accessible experience for everyone who’s coming. You can find out more about our booking procedures by visiting the Booking & Tickets section.

If you would like to organise a familiarisation visit ahead of coming to KWMC or KWMC: The Factory for an event or activity, please contact enquiries@kwmc.org.uk or 0117 903 0444 (for events taking place at KWMC, Leinster Avenue) or thefactory@kwmc.org.uk or 0117 403 2306 (for events taking place at KWMC: The Factory).

Getting here

Both KWMC and KWMC: The Factory are accessible via public transport. Please see the Contact section for more details and directions between venues.

At KWMC (Leinster Avenue) there is a paved path from the pavement to the main entrance and a paved path from the car park to the main entrance. Both have level access. The pavements in Knowle West are generally wide enough for pushchairs and wheelchairs, but please be aware that people tend to park their cars on the pavement of Leinster Avenue.

KWMC: The Factory is accessed via the car park of Filwood Green Business Park. If you aren’t travelling by car and will be coming to The Factory from Hengrove Way, we recommend you come through the main reception of Filwood Green Business Park, via the automatic doors, rather than round the side of the Business Park on the access road (Filwood Park Lane).

During your visit

We know that people learn and engage in activities in different ways. During all events at KWMC and KWMC: The Factory, members of our team will be on hand to support you and help you get the most out of your experience. We will do our best to tailor activities to your needs where possible.

At seated events (such as talks and discussions) we can offer close view seating for visitors who are Deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, Blind or partially sighted.

We can provide access to a separate quiet space during some events if you require it.

Some members of our team have undertaken Dementia Friends training: those who have completed the course wear a Dementia Friends flower badge.

In 2019 the KWMC team completed two full-day training workshops in Inclusive Working Practices.

BSL (British Sign Language)

Our staff are not BSL trained.  Please let us know if you require BSL interpretation and we will look into the possibility of booking an interpreter for an event or course you’re coming to.

Print material

We can provide worksheets and notes in large print.

Please let us know if you would like to read KWMC material in a language other than English, and we’ll do our best to obtain this for you.

Supporting young people

Our Jump Studios team have been trained to support young people with a range of learning, access, wellbeing and mental health needs. KWMC staff who work directly with visitors are checked with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS checked).

Concessions

We are committed to keeping our course prices affordable and we offer concession rates (usually a 10% discount) for some courses for anyone claiming the following benefits: Universal Credit, Income Support, Job Seeker’s Allowance, Disability Living Allowance / Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Employment and Support Allowance. Concession Rates will be listed on course booking pages on our online shop.
