This year-long project used digital media to encourage people to experience, enjoy and access the natural environment in ways that are creative and meaningful.
Wild City centered on the Northern Slopes – three areas of green space spread across Knowle West in South Bristol. The project aimed to increase people’s confidence in using their local green spaces and improve their understanding of the natural environment – it was hoped that this would lead to improved use and enjoyment of the sites in the future.
Knowle West Media Centre provided digital photography training to groups of young people and older people throughout 2013, who then photographed the Slopes across the seasons. The project also captured sound recordings of people’s stories, thoughts and experiences while exploring the Slopes.
In the later stages of the project we commissioned artist Synnove Fredericks to create a series of artworks using images and materials gathered during the year.
About the Slopes
The Northern Slopes are three areas of green open space situated in South Bristol. Within the Northern Slopes there are areas used for getting around, dog walking, exercise, cycling, distance running, informal play, exploring, watching wildlife, growing and finding food, getting away from the stresses of everyday life and for admiring the spectacular views across Bristol.
About the exhibition
Over the year, community groups photographed the green spaces of Knowle West. Whether basking in sunshine or enduring the mud and rain, they captured the Northern Slopes across the seasons. Artist Synnove Fredericks created new artworks using images and materials gathered during the project. The exhibition preview celebrated the Slopes in all their glory and explored them in new ways.
