The Factory

A new space opening up access to the tools, technologies and opportunities of digital manufacturing – in the heart of Knowle West.

Bringing together digital fabrication, cutting edge design and community-led enterprise, The Factory offers a diverse range of activity for a number of different audiences. Trading activity includes making furniture, signage, installations and exhibitions, alongside more bespoke artist commissions. Our facilities and expert technicians are also available to assist with research and development projects looking to experiment, prototype and pursue creative innovation within the design process.

On a local level, The Factory offers a programme of training courses and volunteer opportunities, providing support and advice for those looking to develop these new skills into a career or business of their own.

Our creative problem-solving project Maker Lab in a Box is run in schools, focusing on the development of digital skills and encouraging young people to design, create and evaluate their own projects, guided by local experts and businesses.

The Factory has its roots in the Eagle House Pop Up Furniture Factory – a six-month pilot programme that offered training and employment to Knowle West residents from a temporary base in a disused former youth centre. During our time as leaseholders of Eagle House, we worked with a team of artists, makers and local people to complete a large commission for MIDAS and Bristol City Council to kit out Filwood Green Business Park, making nearly 500 pieces of bespoke wooden furniture. In May 2015 we moved our manufacturing enterprise into one of the new business units at the Business Park and it was renamed KWMC: The Factory.
