Working with the local community groups, older residents and people with dementia, we’ve collected memories about the heritage of Knowle West, such as the Filwood Broadway Cinema, Filwood Swimming Pool and Wills Tobacco Factory.
These memories are now part of a sensory installation, a memory chest that enables people to relive the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of times and places gone by. We wanted to provide a platform for older members of our community to enjoy and reconnect with the past in a meaningful way, and re-affirm them as the best way to learn about the past. We hope that the instillation will also be a useful tool for young people to learn about their local area, and a reminiscence tool for people with dementia.
KWMC is currently displaying the memory chest in the main foyer, so please come along to view the archive of memorabilia we have collected and to interact with the art installation that we have created.
MemoryScapes is now available throughout Bristol and the surrounding area. If you are interested in hiring the memory chest for your own group or organisation, or if you would also like us to deliver some bespoke sensory reminiscence workshops for your group or to create your own memory box, please contact Lucinda Thelwell on firstname.lastname@example.org or 01179030444.
