Workshop: An Introduction to Machine Learning (Artificial Intelligence)

10/07/2019 - 11/07/2019
10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Location: KWMC: The Factory, Filwood Green Business Park

Day 1: Practical AI: Machine Learning & Ethics (Wednesday 10 July 10am – 3pm)

Facilitated by Ben Byford – Podcaster of Machine Ethics and Ethical by Design Artificial Intelligence consultant.

AI and machine learning might seem like scary and confusing terms – maybe producing images of conscious robots, killer spaceship AI’s, or humanity losing control. The reality is somewhat more mundane in comparison to these fantasy visions, but no less exciting.

This workshop aims to educate participants of the reality of common Machine Learning techniques, get hands on with a little coding to explore practical data science implementation, demonstrate AI’s power, and consider the pitfalls and ethics associated with it’s use.

Day 2: Women Making AI (Thursday 11 July 10am – 3pm)

Facilitated by artist-technologists Coral Manton & Birgitte Aga

This one day workshop invites you to co-create an AI assistant. This will be functional assistant that can be used at Knowle West Media Centre and in your community. We aim to create an assistant that better reflects female identity than assistants like Alexa currently do. It will provide participants with basic skills to create an AI voice assistant in Dialogflow (a development platform for conversational systems) and a space to facilitate talking, sharing and listening. We aim to provide women with the skills to take part in AI, developing a more diverse community of makers.

Coral Manton [https://coralmanton.com/] and B Aga [https://birgitteaga.com/] develop collaborative work which intends to unmask the complexity of emergent Ai technologies and challenge the bias, power, ethics and influence imbued within them.

Their most recent collaboration the Women Reclaiming Ai project is an expanding activist art-work, presented as a feminist AI voice assistant, programmed through participatory workshops by a growing community of self-identifying women. Through creating a platform for collective writing and editing the project co-creates an AI that challenges prescribed gender roles.https://womenreclaimingai.com/

Lunch will be provided free of charge on both days, and we highly encourage all participants to remain at The Factory over the lunchtime break to meet and connect with each other and develop discussions around the workshop content and themes.

This workshop is free and open to participants and applicants of the ‘Making It’ training programme. You must be able to attend both workshop days.

Making It is part of the WIDJET programme delivered in partnership with the West of England Combined Authority.
