KWMC The Factory: September INSPIRE Talk – Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf

02/09/2020
12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Our September INSPIRE Talk will explore the Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club – a fun and inclusive community arts project in the Filwood (Knowle West) area of Bristol.

We will be joined by Megan-Clark Bagnall, ClubHouse manager for the Mini Golf Club, visual artist and social maker (and also a Knowle West resident and member of KWMC The Factory), and Nic Marshall, a local carpenter who is working on behalf of re:work to create a real-life, full-sized mini golf course in the heart of Filwood Broadway.

About Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf

Co-ordinated by Filwood Community Centre and funded through Creative Civic Change, Filwood Fantastic is an initiative to support the community-engaged, creative redevelopment of Filwood Community Centre and surrounding Broadway area.

Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf is one part of this transformative work, with an actual mini golf course being constructed for community use by re:work who are working with Bristol-based carpenter Nic Marshall on the physical build.

About Filwood Fantastic Mini Golf Club

The Mini Golf Club project has provided both Megan and the community with a fun social activity over a particularly tricky period – the COVID-19 outbreak.

“I established the golf club during lockdown as a bit of fun to pass the tricky times.  The ClubHouse meetings cheerlead the BIG BUILD for a real-life mini golf course.”

The ClubHouse Members are a group of around 16 households in the local area. They meet online for virtual ClubHouse meet ups on Thursday afternoons. They start each weekly session with a different ClubHouse Member’s favourite song, make mocktails, share in values and ClubHouse rules (which are centred around kindness), and learn more about their Knowle West neighbours and their skills.

During the pandemic, member households have been sharing their designs and prototypes for Mini Golf holes made out of recycled materials. These were recently unveiled in an awards ceremony (or Putt Party) to celebrate these “house holes” and the teams behind them.

The Mini Golf/ Club projects have also touched on other local initiatives such as Hearts and Stars and linked to golf enthusiasts from far beyond the Filwood area meaning the work has resonated both locally and further afield, shining a light on the area and all the fantastic things which happen here.

The Talk

This INSPIRE Talk will be about how Megan makes her community engagement work, and how she found herself making this particular work during the Pandemic. It will also look ahead to the construction of the physical golf course. Nic will be talking about how it will be made and how people can get involved.

KWMC and KWMC The Factory have been involved in Filwood Fantastic in a number of ways and are delighted to facilitate this chat which is hosted by our Digital Fabrication Technician, Fiona.

About Megan

Megan likes to make fun/ny projects with people. She makes intergenerational art projects in the public realm, and celebrates the good and excellent in human nature, to create sincerely feel good art. Megan doesn’t make very serious art, but she is very serious about making art that connects people together.  Megan’s artistic interventions are often identified by the Barratt’s Fruit Salad chew colours; pink and yellow.

About Nic

After completing his Fine Art degree in 2009, Nic found himself working more and more with wood. It was a natural move for him to start making furniture and he’s never looked back. He mixes his love of the sweeping curves found in retro Art Deco designs with his curiosity in modern materials. Nic is now turning the attention to detail required for making furniture to the fun world of mini golf course construction!

About the INSPIRE Talks programme

Each month, our Factory INSPIRE Talks programme invites you into the world of inspirational makers to find out more about their journeys, motivations and processes.

The format is usually of a live talk or discussion followed by a question and answer session (Q and A).

Since March 2020, we have moved these talks online as a result of social distancing rules. We very much encourage the drinking of tea and use of the chat function within the talk to ask questions and share ideas.

Our speakers give their time for free to share their stories and opinions given are their own. Talks are suited to an audience over 18 years of age, though younger people can watch with the supervision of an adult and the understanding that language and concepts used may be more suitable for adults.

After you have registered for this talk you will receive an e-mail with a link to watch the talk and instructions about how to join in the chat if you’d like to.

If you require any support in using the technology, please let us know. If you have any questions ahead of the talk or would prefer to ask questions for the Q and A anonymously by email please contact thefactory@kwmc.org.uk
