COVID-19 Reopening

Updated: 1 September 2020

Knowle West Media Centre (Leinster Avenue) and KWMC The Factory (Filwood Green Business Park) were closed to the public in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic – but we’re on our way to a partial reopening!

During the Spring and Summer months we cleaned both sites and have been busy putting new COVID-safe measures in place so we can welcome you back, to do the things you enjoy in a secure and welcoming environment.

How will reopening work?

We’ll be extending our opening hours at KWMC (Leinster Avenue) and KWMC The Factory from Tuesday 1 September 2020 so there are staff on site five days a week (Monday to Friday).

However, visiting both KWMC (Leinster Avenue) and KWMC The Factory will be by appointment only; for example, attending a small group session that you’ve registered for, or seeing a member of staff you’ve pre-arranged to meet.

We’ll let you know as soon as we’re able to welcome ‘walk ins’ again.

What’s been happening since March?

Since March 2020 our teams have been working hard to respond to people’s needs and adapt our planned programme into a range of online activities.  We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who’s taken part, helped with events, and spread the word about what we’ve been up to.  Your continued commitment, enthusiasm, and support (emotionally and financially) have really helped to keep the team smiling and the organisation going.

We know that not everyone has wanted or been able to engage with us online, so when it was safe to do so we started testing small, socially distanced sessions in our spaces.

At KWMC (Leinster Avenue), our Jump Studios team trialled a series of creative workshops for young people, and the building has been open for a small number of staff and tenants in our managed offices a few days a week since July.

While KWMC The Factory was closed to the public, our technicians returned to the workshops to work on manufacturing commissions for clients and other projects. They’ve also tested out ways to do socially distanced making with Factory members and course participants.

Staying safe and connected

We expect you’re pretty familiar with social distancing rules in public spaces by now. We’ve put several new measures in place and we ask that you follow and respect them while you’re with us.

We’ve designed some new signs for our spaces in case you forget; they’re not the usual ‘hospital style’ signs though – they’re very KWMC…

Our COVID-19 measures are listed below:

#1 Signing In

You’ll probably be used to signing in to the premises when you arrive at KWMC (Leinster Avenue) or KWMC The Factory already, as we’ve always kept a record of who is here for fire safety and to make sure we can contact parents / carers of young people in an emergency.

However, we’ll now ask you for a few more details, such as your contact information, so we can get in touch with you if someone you interacted with while at KWMC or The Factory is being tested for COVID-19 or has had a positive test result.

#2 Social Distancing and Hygiene

Please don’t come to KWMC (Leinster Avenue) or KWMC The Factory if you or someone in your household or support bubble has symptoms of coronavirus – which can be found here.

We also ask that you:

  • use hand sanitiser when you arrive in reception
  • stay two metres away from people you don’t live with
  • regularly wash your hands with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds
  • wash your hands or use hand sanitiser after you’ve touched ‘high touch’ objects such as door handles

Please wear a face covering over your nose and mouth, unless you are exempt from doing so or are a young person taking part in a small-group session with our Jump Studios team.

If you need a ‘sew at home’ pattern for a face mask, you can follow a simple 10-step tutorial with our technician Fiona here!

#3 Limiting Numbers

In line with government guidance, we won’t be running any large-scale events for a while, such as exhibition previews or large group courses.  Activities that happen in person will continue to have limited group sizes and will likely happen outdoors or be spread across several rooms within KWMC (Leinster Avenue) and spaces within KWMC The Factory where being outdoors isn’t possible.

We’ll also ask you to use the lifts in KWMC (Leinster Avenue) one person at a time, unless you need help moving around the building or you have an access need, when you can of course be assisted by a Personal Assistant, carer or family member.

Welcome back

If any of our measures or activities need to change in light of new government guidance, we’ll update you as soon as possible.

Although 2020 is different to the year we’d planned and imagined, we’ll continue to be here for Knowle West, for makers, creatives and artists, for people of all ages.

Thank you for being there for us.

Our new ’social distancing’ reminder sign puts it best: we don’t need to be close to be connected.
