How would you introduce yourself if words weren’t an option?
In August 2026, young people at KWMC explored this question during Radical Creators. As a creative approach to our current Open-Door project, the young people spent three full days preparing for the arrival of an unexpected visitor: an alien from outer space!
Using sound, art, objects and creative technology, young people worked together to build a unique welcome experience that communicated who they are, what their community means to them and what makes people feel welcome at KWMC. Along the way, they explored big questions about identity, belonging and connection.

Young people experimented with a wide range of creative technologies, including field recording, music production, digital drawing, animation, electronics, and digital fabrication. They collected sounds from around the building, transformed them into musical instruments and soundscapes, created visual artworks and animations, and laser cut physical objects. All these were combined together, along with simple conductive materials, to create a unique tool communicating with the alien visitor.
As ideas developed, young people formed teams focused on sound design, instrument making, visual media, and creating decorations for a welcome event. At the end of the three-day project, young people used their interactive ‘device’ to ‘speak’ to the alien. Wanting to show that everyone is welcome, even visitors from outer space, the young people used their new device to say hello to the visitor, ask them questions, and share who we are at KWMC.
This Radical Creators project demonstrated that creativity can be a powerful universal language. Whether communicating with friends, neighbours or imaginary visitors from another galaxy, young people showed how art and technology can help us share who we are and build meaningful connections with others.
At KWMC, we are excited to continue using creative technology to address real world challenges and opportunities. We are seeking collaborators and funders for the 2026-2027 academic year. If you’re interested in working with us around creative technology, youth voice, and social action, we’d love to connect: youngpeople@kwmc.org.uk.
