Volunteers play an important role in supporting our work with communities – in Knowle West and beyond. They help to facilitate our computer drop in sessions and young people’s groups, work in our Front of House team, and give their time to help with projects they’re passionate about.
We have a series of support mechanisms in place to make sure volunteers have useful, meaningful experiences and can learn new skills during their time with us.
Many of our volunteers use the opportunity to develop paid roles. Fabia Jeddere-Fisher, a volunteer with KWMC since 2011, won a place on the Vodafone Foundation World of Difference programme to work part-time for KWMC. Fabia, from Lockleaze, was one of 500 people from across the UK to be selected to work at her chosen charity part-time for four months, supported by the Vodafone Foundation. In early 2013 Fabia coordinated radio and podcasting activities for young people at KWMC.
Other volunteers report that the opportunity to volunteer at KWMC has been a positive one. Michelle Price, who volunteered in the Front of House team, said: “The whole team at the centre were great to work with, they were welcoming and understanding. I felt like part of a truly brilliant team who go out of their way to help the community. It is just a great place to regain your confidence and make you feel like you have made a difference. I can’t thank all the staff enough for giving me the opportunity.”
