The Next City: re-imagining the means of production

16/11/2015
2:30 pm - 8:00 pm

This series of events explores how the new “means of production” can be held in the hands of the many rather than the few and how they can be used to create the places that communities want rather than the non-places the market currently supplies…

Behind the scenes of the Artist Hotel (2:30 – 4:30pm, KWMC)

Interior Architecture students from the University of the West of England (UWE) will give a public tour of the Artist Hotel: A Room with a View, where they’ll present real-scale prototypes of hotel rooms and talk about the ideas and processes of their design and construction. The project has involved the students collaborating with artists, KWMC: The Factory and local people. The hotel room prototypes will then be reviewed by an expert panel of architects, artists and designers.

Followed by:

The Next City (5 – 6:30pm, Novers Park Community Association – next to KWMC)

Digital fabrication technologies hold the possibility for radically democratising the design and construction of how and where we make almost everything – including homes and communities. This event explores how the new “means of production” can be held in the hands of the many rather than the few and how they can be used to create the places communities want, rather than the non-places the market currently predominately supplies.

Speakers include:

Joost Beunderman (00 Architects)
Bruce Bell (Facit Homes)
Je Ahn (Studio Weave)
Melissa Mean (KWMC)
Jonathan Mosely (UWE Architecture Dept.)
Kathrin Böhm (Public Works)

Followed by:

The Artist Hotel: A Room with a View (6:30 – 8pm, KWMC)

The Artist Hotel Knowle West doesn’t exist yet. This exhibition explores what form the Hotel could take and its relationship with the host community and surrounding landscape.

Featuring:

• Live performances presented by artists Sam Halmarack, Richard Layzell, Rachael Miles, and Hannah Clark.
• A prototype of a hotel room designed and constructed by Interior Architecture students from the University of the West of England.
• Five Thousand Island Forest: new photography by Nicholas White documenting the landscape of Bristol and its outer edges.
